Installing a twist lock is much easier than one can believe and gives a professional and<\/span> sophisticated look to<\/span> your bags<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The twist lock can sometimes replace a magnetic clasp. It would fit the look of the Ava bag<\/a> for example.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to install a twist lock tutorial<\/h1>\n

Some twist locks have front plates with prongs<\/strong> and others<\/span> have front plates with s<\/span>crews<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Twist lock<\/h2>\n

The twist lock (with prongs) used for<\/span> this tutorial<\/span> will be installed on a clutch (simplified version of the free Cachotin <\/a>pattern).<\/span><\/p>\n

The twist lock with prongs<\/strong><\/span> has 4 pieces\u00a0<\/span> :<\/p>\n

    The twist lock with screws <\/strong><\/span>has 6 pieces\u00a0<\/span> :<\/p>\n

      The female half<\/span> (front and back plate) of the twist lock is installed on a moving part<\/strong>: the flap of the bag or the flap of a pocket. This flap should already be finished<\/strong> : fabric and lining pieces of the flap sewn together and turned right side out (it may even be already basted to the bag).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      The male half<\/span> of the twist lock is the one that turns and should be installed on a fabric piece<\/strong> of the bag: bag body, pocket… The piece on which the male half will be installed should be unlined.
      \n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      This type of lock has a significant weight<\/strong> and must be installed on heavy weight fabrics. It is advisable to interface the fabric pieces on which the lock will be installed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      Installing the female half of the twist lock<\/h2>\n

      1. Position<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

      Center a plate on the placement marking on the flap. Make sure the plate is horizontal<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      If there is no marking on the pattern,<\/strong> place the plate where you want to install the lock. Make sure that this area of the flap will overlap with the body of the bag where<\/span> the twist button will be installed.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

      2. Trace<\/h3>\n

      Twist lock with PRONGS : <\/strong>Trace the inside perimeter of the hole.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      Connect the lines. This new outer line is the one you will cut along at the next step.<\/p>\n

      3. Cut<\/h3>\n

      With embroidery scissors cut a cross in the middle of the oval marking, cutting through all layers. Then cut out the area, cutting 1 to 2 mm outside of the line.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      If your fabric frays, you can apply fabric glue or “Fray Check” on the edges of the hole. This is what I did for the lining side of the flap.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

      4. Install<\/h3>\n

      Twist lock with PRONGS<\/h2>\n

      Place the front<\/span> plate on the fabric side<\/strong> of the flap, sliding the prongs through the hole.<\/p>\n

      Fit the two plates together and spread the prongs apart over the back plate<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      Tip if once assembled the plates of the twist lock are loose:<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

      • Disassemble<\/span> the plates.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n
      • Cut a small<\/span> rectangle of fleece slightly larger<\/span> than the twist lock and cut out a hole in it, as in steps 1 and 2.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n
      • Slide the fleece inside the flap (through the hole<\/span> cut at step 2 or through the top of the flap).<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n
      • Align the holes of the flap and the fleece and reattach the plates.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Place the front<\/span> plate on the fabric side<\/strong> of the flap.<\/p>\n

        Installing the male half of the twist lock<\/h2>\n

        Installing the male half is done the same way whether the twist lock has PRONGS or SCREWS.<\/p>\n

        1. Position<\/h3>\n

        If there is no placement marking on the pattern,<\/strong> position the flap properly over the bag body and make a mark at the center of the twist lock hole.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

        Centre the washer over the placement marking and mark the two notches.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        Using your seam ripper carefully and gently nick through the two notches.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        Slide the prongs of the twist button through the notches, toward the wrong side of your fabric.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        5. Reinforce<\/h3>\n

        To further reinforce the area, slide a small piece of ultra firm stabilizer through the prongs (Jeffytex or Pellon 70 Peltex).<\/p>\n

        Slide the washer through the prongs, over the stabilizer and fold the prongs toward the center.<\/p>\n
