Rock, is a carry-on and weekender unisex bag pattern, with a trolley sleeve option to slide over a rolling luggage handle.
The Rock pattern includes 2 sizes. Small: free Ryanair carry-on size. Medium: large weekender size.
The Rock pattern is supplied with an additional projector friendly PDF file.
Rock, carry-on or weekender, unisex
Rock is a carry-on or weekender unisex bag. Sew one for each member of the family!
Its opening extends to the sides in a distinctive pretty triangle design.
With its handles you can carry it by hand or over the shoulder, and a removable shoulder strap option is included.
Rock has 4 to 5 pockets : 2 zippered pockets inside + 1 front pocket with flap + 1 zippered pocket at the back and, also at the back, a choice of 1 patch pocket or a trolley sleeve.
Trolley sleeve option
The Rock pattern also includes a trolley sleeve option to slide over a rolling luggage handle.
Indeed, in addition to the zippered pocket at the back of the bag, you can choose to add either 1 patch pocket or a trolley sleeve.
2 Sizes : free Ryanair carry-on or large weekender bag
- Small – Free Ryanair carry-on* : width 38 cm (15″) x height 25 cm (9 7/8″) x depth 18 cm (7 1/8″). *on the pattern release date (June 2023), Rock Small is slightly smaller than the dimensions allowed by Ryanair for a free personal carry-on (40 x 25 x 20 cm). This slightly smaller size is to help the bag stay within the allowed size once it’s full.
- Medium – Large weekender bag : width 45 cm (17 3/4″) x height 30 cm (11 7/8″) x depth 20 cm (7 7/8″).
Sewing level
The majority of the Rock pattern’s 15 testers ranked it as intermediate and it’s therefore the level that I assigned it.
I developed an assembly technique for the opening that extends into a triangle on the sides, which is easier than it looks on the finished bag 😉 With a clean finish on the inside and on the outside of course.

I just checked these dimensions against Australia domestic carry-on luggage.
Rock’s medium 45x30x20 easily fits within 56x36x23 carry-on dimension limit here.
That’s great news, thank you Karey !
I’d need a 38x30x20 for Norwegian handluggage, how should I alter the sizes to easiest make this happen? I’d like to get as big bag as possible (because the weight limit is 10kg which is quite a lot), but I am not sure whether to make the medium size smaller or small size bigger.
Any advice? 🙂
Hi Katariina,
I would go with the Medium size because 2 out of the 3 dimensions are already the same. Medium size is : width 45 cm x height 30 cm x depth 20 cm.
Getting the width down From 45 to 38 won’t be difficult (less and easier alterations than modifying the 2 other dimensions).
I’m sending you this answer via email also, with the alterations needed.
